Inspiration…

Instant results are not always the best results. Have a little patience, and you can greatly expand your possibilities.
If your desires were always fulfilled immediately, you would have nothing to look forward to. You would miss out on the joy of anticipation.
There are some good things you can have instantly. There are many, many more good and valuable things that will take time.
You deserve more than mere instant gratification. Be willing to take the time, and to put in the effort, and give yourself access to life’s greatest rewards.
Value that arrives in an instant is probably going to be gone in an instant. Value that takes time and commitment to create will enrich your life far into the future.
Dream, plan, prepare and persist in your efforts for the long haul. The more time and effort you give, the more richness you can achieve.

Motivation…

 Success Is Tedious

Success is often tedious. When we see success in others, it looks exciting and fun. We see someone who is successful in business living in a magnificent house, driving a shiny new car and taking exotic vacations. We see a successful athlete being cheered by the crowd after a winning performance on the playing field. We usually see only the results of success in others.

What we often fail to see and appreciate is how they got there. The person with a successful business has spent many long, boring hours, working late into the night on tasks that no one would consider fun or exciting. The winning athlete has spent day after day on the practice field and in the weight room, laboriously training mind and body.

Those who understand, appreciate and accept that the road to achievement can often be tiresome, those who are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter if it is often tedious and boring, are the ones who will get the reward they seek.

Find Your Heart’s Desire

You know what is best for you. You know what you need to do. So why is it so hard to do it? Your thinking mind knows it would be great to get up at six in the morning and exercise, but you have a stronger urge to roll over and go back to sleep.

What will get you out of bed? Indeed, what will get you out of that prison of your own making known as your comfort zone? One of the greatest motivators the world has ever known — desire. If the desire is strong enough, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it.

How can you make the desire strong enough? First, find what you really, truly want — not what someone else wants for you, not what others think you should want, what YOU want. Then, connect it clearly and unambiguously within yourself to whatever must be done.

You are willing. You are able. You will do what needs to be done. You can be driven, disciplined and committed. Just connect your actions with your true desires.

Proceed

What would you do right now if you knew that everything today would turn out perfectly? What project would you start, what person would you talk to, what problem would you tackle if you could be assured of success?

Is there anything you’re putting off because you’re afraid of failure? Is there anyone you’re avoiding because you’re afraid of what they would say or think?

There is no guarantee of success. But there is a guarantee that if you never go for it, you’ll never have it. And even in the failed attempts, you’ll learn and grow. There is no guarantee that other people will think highly of all you say and do. But that’s their problem.

Do you believe in the worth of your own pursuits? If so, then what could possibly prevent you from following them? If you’re looking for a sure thing, then here’s one — everything you achieve will come only from the things you attempt. In order to succeed, you must proceed. Today is a great day to start.

Fired. Not the first time it’s happened, but it reinforced what I already knew; I’m a terrible employee. I just had to face facts and move on. So rather than getting back on that “how the hell am I going to find a job” train, the only right thing to do was to start my own company.

My first act of business? Pile into my buddy’s 1982 Celica, nicknamed Celly, and drive to galveston to party. Of course we stayed in only the best $19.95 a night, plug the hairdryer in the wall and the circuit blows, motel. Nothing but the best as I prepared for my journey into entrepreneurial territory again. I could say I was preocuppied with how to get my new business off the ground. That while my friends got drunk, did stupid tourist tricks and ate at greasy spoons, I sat by the pool on the 1 chaise lounge chair with rust on the clean side and wrote up my businessplan. I didn’t. I got just as drunk and ate the same disgusting food. Then we faced the road trip terror that everyone knows exists, but refuses to admit, the ride home. It wasn’t until we pulled up to the apartment that it hit me. No job. No money. No way to pay the bills. But I had nice towels. Continue reading

Success and Motivation, Part 1

I did it too. I drove by big houses and would wonder who lived there. What did they do for a living? How did they make their money? Someday, I would tell myself, I would live in a house like that. Every weekend I would do it.

I read books about successful people. In fact, I read every book or magazine I could get my hands on. I would tell myself 1 good idea would pay for the book and could make the difference between me making it or not.

I worked jobs I didn’t like. I worked jobs I loved, but had no chance of being a career. I worked jobs that barely paid the rent. I had so many jobs my parents wondered if I would be stable. Most of them aren’t on my resume anymore because I was there so short a time or they were so stupid I was embarrassed. You don’t want to write about selling powdered milk or selling franchises for TV repair shops. In every job, I would justify it in my mind whether I loved it or hated it that I was getting paid to learn and every experience would be of value when I figured out what I wanted to do when I grew up.

If I ever grew up, I hoped to run my own business some day. It’s exactly what I told myself every day. In reality, I had as much doubt as confidence. I was just hoping the confidence would win over the doubt and it would all work out for the best. Continue reading

Talent isn’t enough. You need motivation-and persistence, too: what Steinbeck called a blend of faith and arrogance. When you’re young, plain old poverty can be enough, along with an insatiable hunger for recognition. You have to have that feeling of “I’ll show them.” If you don’t have it, don’t become a writer.
