Meet A Mogul…..LaReana Nichole (May Vora Jewelry)

Creativity and jewelry go hand in hand. A jeweler takes time to craft a piece from the inspiration around them, with hopes that the art will translate the same beauty to the buyer as it did to the creator. However, as with all artist it is a process to get the art to the masses. While designing jewelry involves freedom and expression, the business side of it demands discipline and determination.

To kick off our Meet A Mogul series, Urban Mogul Life interviewed entrepreneur LeReana Nichole president of May Vora Jewelry. LeReana Nichole took the time to explain what inspires her work as well as some of the challenges she faces bringing her art to consumer’s hands.

How did you become a jewelry designer?
Completely by accident because I always thought dress design was my calling! I designed a dress to wear to a fashion event in Milwaukee and felt it needed a statement necklace. I created a four tier necklace from pink beads, black rock chips, and chains with a magnetic clasp inspired from a vintage Channel necklace…the necklace received way more inquires than the dress did! I still design a dress from time to time- that is one of my passions so I can’t help but to keep designing dresses!

What inspires you when creating your designs?
Absolutely anything! From a song to chatting with friends, it all comes from allowing the creativity to be free and not structuring it too much.

What is your process from thought to completion?
I don’t have a set process really. Sometimes I’ll spend hours designing a piece, start creating it, then the piece will look nothing like the initial idea!

How do you decide on what materials to use?
It all depends on what collection I’m working on and what inspiration pops up! I try to stay as consistent as possible throughout a particular collection. The ‘Jade’ collection is eclectic and my creativity is untamed. ‘Aries’ collection has all the spunk and pops of colors that tend to be trendier. The ‘Leigh’ collection is full of metal base statement charms. ‘Euniece’ has sophistication and style using pearls, rhinestones and semi precious stones throughout the collection.

When did you decide to turn your passion into a business?
About a month after I received the first request to make a necklace! One of my best decisions to date!

How did you come up with the name May Vora?
By merging the name of my Aunt Mary and her husband, my Uncle Ivora, they passed away within days of each other in 2009. My Aunt and Uncle were like second parents to me and two of my biggest supporters with perusing a career in fashion! Every collection is named in honor of someone in my family or someone I’m extremely close to. ‘Jade’ is my god-daughter’s middle name. ‘Aries’ is my close friend’s middle name. ‘Leigh’ is a re-spelling of my Father’s middle name Lee. ‘Euniece’ is my Mother’s middle name. ‘Cole’, the men’s collection, is short for Coleman and ‘Trinity’, our little girl’s collection is named after a good friend’s daughter.

What obstacles have you encountered as a new designer?
Breaking into any industry is difficult, but fashion can be extremely difficult! As a new designer I’ve realized that many people want to know your resume as far as who has purchased, worn or knows about your line which means little to nothing when it comes down to the designer’s workmanship, passion, and originality! To me, a designer can have the top names wearing their brand but if the product falls apart or there is no consideration toward detail what exactly is the point? Quality takes priority in our designs.

Do you stay up on the current trends?
I do, but not feverously. My favorite fashion era is the 1940s and that’s where I draw most of my inspiration from.

Do you have collections for men?
YES! ‘Cole’ was formally launched at our Spring Trunk Show in June. The collection includes a range of bracelets and necklaces designed for casual wear or a special occasion. Chain mail, silk knots and leather are a few of the materials used for ‘Cole’.

What’s next for May Vora?
We are excited to introduce our newest collection designed especially for little girls, ‘Trinity’, in October! ‘Trinity’ and the ‘Sorority Collection’ are currently the only collections solely special order, making the jewelry pieces particularly exclusive. Also our Working Woman Wednesday series titled ‘Sip, Shop & Socialize’ is held every other month and the next social event is August 8, 2012 at Cuvee Champagne Lounge from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

How can our readers purchase your pieces?

Mogul Street Style: A Day in Soho, NYC

so today i had to make a run into the city, soho to be exact, to take a pair of shoes to a luxury consignment store i recently discovered online. for all you she-moguls out there a stop by “a second chance” is a must if you happen to be in new york.

“a second chance” is a designer resale boutique specializing in the ultra hot & luxurious used designer fashions and accessories. they buy & consign and its located at 155 prince street. now since i was in soho, i decided i may as well browse around a bit and see what caught my eye. first up was the windows of club monaco on prince street…

now, i’m not really a fan of club monaco but the mannequins in the window are impeccably styled by their visual manager, ingrid. i love the looks and couldn’t help but snap a shot of each.

then i remembered that there was pinkberry up the street and decided to get yogurt and while i was on my way i stumbled upon this young lady in this cute denim dress.

i think this dress is really sweet and what is a little hard to tell by the picture is that the left sleeve of the dress is cream jersey cotton. it was really cute. the shoes went perfectly and the yellow belt adds just enough contrast.

so i spent several hours walking around soho and just as i was about to leave i received a call from my bff, who happens to be the store manager of a nordstrom store, telling me that nordstrom just opened their new not-for-profit store, “treasure & bond,” just the day before. so OF COURSE the style & shopping blogger in me couldn’t pass that up & i headed in that direction. while doing so i saw this beauty…

so nordstrom decided to do something new in mixing retail and philanthropy by opening “treasure & bond.” aside from operating expenses, all of the profits of the store go to non-profits dedicated to helping children in new york. how nice is that?

the store is located at 360 west broadway.

after leaving the store i was ready to head back to the good ‘ol bk and just when i thought my journey was done, i looked up and the picture was so perfect-i had to take it…

the stylish lady with the afro said she was just sitting ‘cuz she was too tired to move…& i felt her ‘cuz after all the walking i did-i couldn’t wait to sit myself.

The Talks: Interview with Tom Ford

The Talks highlights fashion designer Tom Ford as its latest interview subject. Below is an excerpt from the intriguing piece which steers clear of the cliche fashion-related questions and delves into more of a personal side of the Southwest native. Topics of interest include Tom’s current state of mind, his spirituality, personal relationships and inspiration, although the interview definitely centers on the designer’s simplistic nature and appreciation for life as a whole, which is quite refreshing to read.

Mr. Ford, have you had a midlife crisis?
Yes. Leaving Gucci was devastating for me. Devastating because I had really put everything into that for fifteen years and all of a sudden I had no identity. “Who am I? What am I doing? I have no forum to speak to anyone anymore or to convey my thoughts or ideas.” Maybe I drank a little too much – living in London that’s a very easy thing to do. The emphasis in my life maybe switched to things that were not the important things. So yeah, I had a bit of a midlife crisis. I wish there was a better term for that. It comes to everybody, maybe in your thirties, maybe in your forties, maybe in your sixties or seventies, who knows. You get to the moment where you feel the clock is ticking and you are wondering if you are really getting the most out of your life.

If you have everything in life it is easier to lose yourself, it seems.
And if you do have everything it is also easier to understand that those are not the important things. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t get to that point. They spend their lives striving and still don’t learn those lessons. Other people figure it out at age twenty and they’re completely balanced and together and understand how to keep things in check from an early age.

How would you describe your current state of mind?
I feel that I don’t need anything for a good life. I grew up in New Mexico and the older I get I have less need for contemporary culture and big cities and all the stuff we are bombarded with. I am happier at my ranch in the middle of nowhere watching a bug carry leaves across the grass, listening to silence, riding my horse, and being in open space. So I have some sort of security that if I lost everything in my life, I would be very happy with the simple things because they are the ones that are important.

So the glamour you stand for doesn’t interest you?
After just being in New Mexico for two months, I realized that I could really work from anywhere. I am really a loner after all; I am really not a social person. Because of my job people think I am out every night, but I really hate all that. I am somebody who likes to be alone and see some close friends. I am a shy and introspective person.

Do you get the most inspiration from nature? It is the ultimate beauty, after all.
Yes, nature is the closest thing to God and I don’t mean God by any sort of religion but by the connection to the universe, which I think we have lost. The American Indians had that and where I live is actually the center of the Anasazi Indian civilization. I even have two huge Anasazi ruins on the property of my ranch. I am not saying that there definitely is some sort of spirituality coming from there, but there might be. When you are close to the earth and you get up when the sun comes up and you go to sleep when it goes down, it puts everything in perspective.

Really?
Yes, all the rest of this crap just fades away. We’ve lost our contact with the earth. Dogs don’t have guilt, dogs don’t have insecurity complexes, dogs don’t think that they need a bigger house than the other dog. Dogs are just completely themselves. They’re very in touch, they’re not thinking about their death. They are just rolling on their back, enjoying what that feels like. I think that is sort of the appeal of animals in our lives; that is what’s important.

Are you a spiritual person?
I am a spiritual person in an eastern religion kind of way. I learned that happiness for all of us is a switch that you flick in your brain. It doesn’t have anything to do with getting a new house, a new car, a new girlfriend, or a new pair of shoes. Our culture is very much about that; we are never happy with what we have today. We always think that we need something else to be happy.

This all sounds like you have a tough time living the Hollywood life that everybody expects you to.
I did have a tough time dealing with it and I have learned how to separate it. It is a performance; it is me playing a role. I am not saying that there are no aspects of it that I enjoy; I love beautiful women, beautiful dresses, and beautiful flowers. But all those things have to stay in perspective. There is nothing wrong with loving the fact that we are physical beings but you have got to keep them in perspective. It is just a diversion. It’s one of the nice things in life, like eating a great steak or kissing a good kisser – well, kissing a good kisser is maybe more valuable than all the other stuff – but these are things you have to leave behind when you leave the planet. When I am on my deathbed, I don’t think I will be thinking about a nice pair of shoes I had or my beautiful house. I am going to be thinking about an evening I spent with somebody when I was twenty where I felt that I was just absolutely connected to them.

Are you really that much of a romantic?
Yeah, I’m really a romantic.

How long does it take every morning for you to become that Tom Ford you were talking about before?
It takes me a long time in the morning to become the person that other people expect me to be. When I feel depressed and I have a bad day or something terrible has happened or I have to face something, I go through a very precise ritual getting dressed in the morning. In a sense it is armor; I’m building up a layer. If everything in my material world is in order, I will be able to get through it. That perfectionism comes from me being a Virgo. My inner world is related to my outer world. If my house is a wreck, I’m a wreck. If I am together, that’s together. That’s a kind of balance.
