Jada Pinkett Smith Gets Naked…For A Cause ;-)

I like gratuitous nudity as much as the next fella…but that’s not what this is all about :-) Jada Pinkett Smith recently collaborated with Selma Hayek to bring attention to the growing problem of human trafficking. Jada’s band, Wicked Evolution, recorded the song ‘Nada Se Compara’, and produced a video directed by Selma Hayek. It just so happens that one of my favorite pieces of eye candy (Jada) just so happens to be naked as a JayBird!

The issue of human trafficking may have gone under your radar to this point, but there are few places left on the map that haven’t been affected by it. Jada credits her daughter Willow for drawing her attention to the cause. I’ll admit that,  until recently, I was under the impression that  this was a problem that existed primarily in third world countries where people could go missing for months without the word spreading beyond a few villages; or that it it was an issue that illegal immigrants had to deal with due to issues with  tracking or reporting to authorities. But that’s not the case. The statistic reported on DontSellBodies.org says that 83% of confirmed trafficking case in the U.S. are American born citizens…and they start as young as 11 years old. The other disturbing fact is the majority of these don’t originate from abductions as one might think…but instead from Love. So then I searched arrest archives in my hometown…and found out that 50+ people had been arrested recently in a human trafficking scheme. Apparently the danger lurks a little closer than we think…be aware.

Mary Jane Smokers Rejoice (Swipe)

CHICAGO — Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn’t harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn’t do the kind of damage tobacco does.

The results, from one of the largest and longest studies on the health effects of marijuana, are hazier for heavy users – those who smoke two or more joints daily for several years. The data suggest that using marijuana that often might cause a decline in lung function, but there weren’t enough heavy users among the 5,000 young adults in the study to draw firm conclusions.

Still, the authors recommended “caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered.”

Marijuana is an illegal drug under federal law although some states allow its use for medical purposes.

The study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham was released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The findings echo results in some smaller studies that showed while marijuana contains some of the same toxic chemicals as tobacco, it does not carry the same risks for lung disease.

It’s not clear why that is so, but it’s possible that the main active ingredient in marijuana, a chemical known as THC, makes the difference. THC causes the “high” that users feel. It also helps fight inflammation and may counteract the effects of more irritating chemicals in the drug, said Dr. Donald Tashkin, a marijuana researcher and an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Tashkin was not involved in the new study.

Study co-author Dr. Stefan Kertesz said there are other aspects of marijuana that may help explain the results.

Unlike cigarette smokers, marijuana users tend to breathe in deeply when they inhale a joint, which some researchers think might strengthen lung tissue. But the common lung function tests used in the study require the same kind of deep breathing that marijuana smokers are used to, so their good test results might partly reflect lots of practice, said Kertesz, a drug abuse researcher and preventive medicine specialist at the Alabama university.

The study authors analyzed data from participants in a 20-year federally funded health study in young adults that began in 1985. Their analysis was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The study randomly enrolled 5,115 men and women aged 18 through 30 in four cities: Birmingham, Chicago, Oakland, Calif., and Minneapolis. Roughly equal numbers of blacks and whites took part, but no other minorities. Participants were periodically asked about recent marijuana or cigarette use and had several lung function tests during the study.

Overall, about 37 percent reported at least occasional marijuana use, and most users also reported having smoked cigarettes; 17 percent of participants said they’d smoked cigarettes but not marijuana. Those results are similar to national estimates.

On average, cigarette users smoked about 9 cigarettes daily, while average marijuana use was only a joint or two a few times a month – typical for U.S. marijuana users, Kertesz said.

The authors calculated the effects of tobacco and marijuana separately, both in people who used only one or the other, and in people who used both. They also considered other factors that could influence lung function, including air pollution in cities studied.

The analyses showed pot didn’t appear to harm lung function, but cigarettes did. Cigarette smokers’ test scores worsened steadily during the study. Smoking marijuana as often as one joint daily for seven years, or one joint weekly for 20 years was not linked with worse scores. Very few study participants smoked more often than that.

Like cigarette smokers, marijuana users can develop throat irritation and coughs, but the study didn’t focus on those. It also didn’t examine lung cancer, but other studies haven’t found any definitive link between marijuana use and cancer.

Denver Has More Weed Spots Than Starbucks

Well damn I need to catch the next plane to Denver and join the Mile High Club!!

In Denver, there are more medical marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks, according to The Daily.

Nearly 300 medical marijuana dispensaries have been established for Colorado’s residence since the passing of Amendment 20 in the 2000 general election. And according to The Daily, some of these dispensaries, in order to help bring in business, even offer first-time customers a free joint.

At this rate it is just a matter of time before the wacky tobacky gets legalized and we can just head to the gas station for a bag of that Peppermint Patty!

Idris Elba to Open Health Clinic in Sierra Leone (Swipe)

*British actor Idris Elba is planning to open a healthcare clinic in Sierra Leone to provide support for sick families in his father’s homeland.

The actor was born in England to African parents and admits he’s “embarrassed” he’s never visited his father’s birthplace or his mother’s hometown in Ghana. So he’s putting together plans to boost healthcare in Sierra Leone by teaming up with a cousin to fund a medical unit in the country – and he’s even considering helping the region’s arts industry.

“It’s embarrassing. I have to go. There are plans, serious plans! I can’t wait,” Elba tells Britain’s Observer Magazine. “I want to go to Sierra Leone with something – whether it’s some sort of contribution to healthcare, or to the entertainment industry. My cousin is a nurse; we are talking about opening a clinic.

“I would really like to open a studio in Sierra Leone. It’s a country that can actually house and look like many parts of the world. If I could somehow encourage a film community to use Sierra Leone as the studio in West Africa to make films there, that would be really cool.”

This is one Dogg who’s definitely gone to heaven.

Sadly, after years of battling deteriorating health, rapper and LBC native Nate Dogg (whose real name was Nathaniel Hale) passed away at the age of 41.

No exact cause of death was immediately released when the family announced his death to the Long Beach Press Telegram, though the rapper suffered two massive strokes in recent years, one in 2007 which left him partially paralyzed, and another in 2008.

Diddy Stealing From Charity???????

Mr. Take That aka Sean Combs has been recently accused of doing just that. “TAKING THAT”! According to The New York Post Diddy choose two breast cancer organizations  to be the beneficiary of proceeds from a “Pinky Party” hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs in Long Island. The charities state that after the party took place, Diddy left in possession of over five figures, while they were left with nothing.

Furthermore Diddy states that he is in fact an advocate for breast cancer awareness, but informed The New York Post that he did not negotiate the event, nor did he agree to contribute to the charity.

“I didn’t know what the [club] owner promised — that had nothing to do with me,” Diddy said in the interview. “I had no information about the charity. When the event was booked, it was just for an appearance. I agreed to let him add the charity because I thought it was a good idea.”

With that said the club promoter that set the function up, did promise the organizations that they could setup tables for fundraising purposes, which eventually ended up not being monitored because the individuals assigned to keep track of any donations began to party with Diddy! (Yall Know Diddy throw the best parties!!)

“It was agreed that if there was a profit, a portion of it would be given to the charity,”  “But the night of the event, there was a torrential rainstorm. They expected thousands and only a few hundred showed up. So they lost money.”

How To Turn Yourself Into An Early Riser (Swipe)

Wake Up Early: 4 Steps

Thinkstock

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Benjamin Franklin’s quote is used so often that it’s nearly a cliche. However, this simple piece of advice can make all the difference in your daily life. Getting enough sleep and having extra time in the morning before rushing off will give you peace of mind throughout the day.

Try to give yourself something to look forward to each morning, even something small like high-quality coffee or fresh bagels. A little treat to start the day mixed with a solid morning routine can make all the difference in your temperament. Whether you’re establishing a habit of waking up early or just getting up to catch an early flight, these four easy will make your life easier.

1- Go to bed early

This seems brain-dead obvious if you’re wanting to wake up early, but too many people put off going to bed, thinking: “Well, I’ll be tired tomorrow either way.” Getting six to eight hours of solid, uninterrupted sleep makes all the difference when getting up early and staying focused through the day.

Many guys will make the excuse that they can’t go to bed until after midnight. You can — you just have to start the process early. One thing that will help you hit the racks is getting off your computer at least an hour before going to bed. Also, don’t watch TV right before going to sleep, especially the news. Let your brain have time to wind down. Read a book or write in a journal. Continue reading

So Did They Find The Fountain of Youth???

Looks like some researchers have been messing with mice and the outcome may keep our kids young forever!! A group of scientist have found a way to speed up aging in mice, only to slow it back down! Now does that mean we can be Forever Young like a Jay-Z song? Not sure. But you never know, it may help us live an extra 10 years or so.

Toss the Rogaine and Viagra? Not just yet.

But Harvard scientists have found that some effects of aging, such as hair loss, infertility and decreased brain function, can be stopped. And not just stopped: the scientists’ research, published today in the journal Nature, showed that it’s possible even to reverse the signs of aging.

“Basically, what this study teaches us is that there’s a point of return in aging,” senior author Dr. Ronald A. DePinho, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, told CBS News.

DePinho and his team looked at the protective caps of repetitive DNA, called telomeres, found at the ends of chromosomes. Each time cells divide, their telomeres shorten, causing cells to age. Researchers hoped that by amping up the gene that controls production of an enzyme called telomerase they could keep chromosomes from getting shorter, thereby reversing the signs of aging.

The mice were engineered to have low levels of telomerase. As a result, they suffered from the same sorts of health problems that affect 80-year-old humans. Think of them as gray, balding mice that can’t have kids and have memory problems.

The study showed that boosting telomerase levels triggered a “dramatic reversal in the signs of aging,” DePinho said. Brain function improved, and the mice regained their fertility and youthful-looking fur.

So does this mean we’ve found the key to immortality?

Mellow ME

Throughout history civilization has always had a need to indulge. Smoking and drinking are the best forms of indulgence. People often ask others why they smoke. In the above picture Bob is partaking in one of his daily rituals which is to smoke one to the head to mellow his soul. Well, more than likely your at work and you can’t have the satisfaction of taking one to the head. Even if you do not smoke you still like the feeling of having your mind free of sorrow for the time being. No one has ever asked the question why people smoke. Smoke is like your friend who doesn’t ask anything of you, smoke is that sense of gratitude after a long journey, smoke is the essence of light that’s creating chemistry in your mind. The United States has built an entire justice system around prosecuting individuals for the possession of good smoke.

Police prosecuted 858,408 persons for marijuana violations in 2009, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s annual Uniform Crime Report, released today. The arrest total is the second highest ever reported by the FBI, and marks a 1.3 percent increase in the number of arrests reported in 2008 (847,864). Continue reading
