Last week, 30,000 cartons of counterfeit cigarettes were seized by investigators in Brooklyn. The cigarettes were taken from a warehouse in Borough Park and are worth an estimated $4.5 million on the street. The operation was part of a six-month investigation, and one arrest was made.
Yin Haun Zhao has been accused of second degree trademark counterfeiting and attempting to evade or defeat cigarette and tobacco products tax. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison.
Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes says the cigarettes were phony versions of popular brands like Camel and Marlboro. Hynes notes that while smoking cigarettes is already horrible for you, smoking counterfeit cigarettes is even worse.
In addition, selling that much of a product untaxed would severely damage the city’s economy. Gothamist says that the $4.5 million worth of cigarettes would have generated $1.8 million worth of tax revenue if they were sold legally.

I swear it seems like Dubai gets every damn thing. Now these cats will have a chance to sleep with the fish and wake up to tell people about it. Dubai has plans to open the ”Water Discus, a futuristic hotel with one component located about 10 meters beneath the sea. The bottom component will contain 21 rooms. The hotel will be built by a Poland-based company named Deep Ocean Technology (DOT).The Independent reports that DOT has partnered with Swiss firm BIG InvestConsult AG to build the hotel. Emirates 24/7 reports that construction of the unusual hotel will begin this year in Gdynia, Poland.”
ATL rapper Shawty Lo is pleading his case with anyone who will listen, specifically the Oxygen network, to give his currently shelved “All My Babies’ Mamas” television special another chance.
According to Shawty Lo, people have made their assumptions simply off an extensive trailer and not seen what the show really has to offer.
“Yeah I really understand. They have the right to think that, but at least give the show a chance, to see what’s goin’ on,” Shawty said in an interview in response to the show’s backlash. “They makin’ their assumptions off a 13-minute trailer and this like the biggest news around the world right now and it’s unbelievable. … The show wasn’t about, we finna be fightin’.
