Places I’ve Shot: 5 Pointz
Written by Urban Mogul Life on March 11, 2015
I’ve hustled across this great country of ours and even balled out in a few other countries. One place I’ve gone to an absurd amount of time is New York (not Manhattan though…yuck). I love the freedom of style, art and life in general. One of my favorite spots to visit there was, the “graffiti mecca”, 5 Pointz in Long Island City, Queens.
5 Points, which represents the 5 boroughs of New York, was an enormous building that brought together graffiti artists from all over the world to showcase their skills. Since the early 90’s commissioned artists have been bombing the building which was slated to eventually become a graffiti museum. After being cited for several problems and an accident, the city shut the building down. a few years later it was announced that it was being redeveloped for some fancy housing. Fortunately, I got the chance to see the building several times before it was whitewashed and later demolished.
It wasn’t just a building coated in aerosol, it was a centerpiece of hip hop culture that delighted the eye of anyone with a love for art. My only regret was not getting photos of the B.I.G. mural that could be seen coming around the corner on the 7 train. Take a look below…yo. That rhymed. I should rap.
