Chris Rock’s 4th of July Tweet…. And Why We Should Be Mindful On What We Celebrate

Chris Rock took to his Twitter page on the 4th 0f July and dropped a little knowledge on Independence Day, basically that it means nothing to African-Americans.

“Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.”

Now maybe you can blame the Malcolm X that was engraved in my psyche since the red, black, and green medallion days, but I find nothing wrong with this Tweet. Of course conservatives may have a different view-point than those of Chris’, but was he wrong? What were Africans in America doing around 1776? Knee deep in someone’s cotton field. They still had a close to 90 years of bondage. So freedom/independence  to some meant bondage/servitude to others.

I’m not bashing or criticizing those African-Americans who love the hell out of July 4th. To each its own, but please be mindful of what you choose to celebrate. Do you think the average non African-American would celebrate Juneteenth?
