No, no, no. This is not Billie Holiday. This is Lorraine Glover, wife of hard bop trumpet star Donald Byrd. Photograph was taken by famed jazz photographer William Claxton in 1960 – when Billie Holiday was already dead. This beautiful photo keeps popping up on the internet with the wrong caption. And by the way: It’s not Valaida Snow either!
Thank you very much for the correction. I had my doubts initially but found the picture credited several more times as Billie Holiday. There aren’t many pictures of Lorraine Glover that pop up on a general search. Even after including the photographer’s name I only found the picture properly credited 2 other times. UML will make it a third! It’s a beautiful piece.
Haha I had my doubts to…but it was such a nice picture that I just had it put on my 26th birthday cake on july 9th,..and my postings on facebook all accredited to Billie! hahah.. And even my whole family/friends I told it was billie…but it don’t matter much because it’s such a beautiful picture and it is representing that musical era….It’s all what the mind believes! There I was jumping around at my 26th birthday last week thinking billie was adorning my cake…playing her music! having conversations about her with jazz know how people..people not believing it was her…had never seen such a great

You’re both wrong. I know the Blackbyrd and his wife very well. The lady in the picture holding Dr. Byrd’s trumpet is his wife, but her name is Yourna. I spoke with her 3 days ago, and she is still strikingly beautiful! She remembers taking the photo. I’m puzzled as to why the photographer William Claxton credited the young lady in the picture as Lorraine Glover.
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen in me fookin’ life! Bloody hell, what an incredible image. Knocked me sideways fer a moment it did. Aye, mad props to findin’ this lil’ gem indeed. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever had such a hard time tryin’ to control the expletives wishin’ to come out of me mouth! lol
