Mogul Flashback….Superman I & II

Written by on December 11, 2010

As you may have noticed today has a Superman theme!! Why?? Because Superman I & II are the greatest superhero films of all time!! That’s why!! The film successfully brings the elements from the comics and cartoons together in a way that screams classic. Think about it, you had Marlon Brando as Jor-El. Christopher Reeve played the perfect Supz!! We had Super Villains x 3!! (In fact I will say that these cats were the best villains in any hero film!) And you had a film score that rivals Star Wars!!! If you love hero films, then I am sure Superman I & II ranks high on your list!!

To totally appreciate the Supz in all his grandeur you have to watch Superman II: The Richard Donner Edition. It meshes and brings the story of Superman I to a full circle. While adding to the Superman myth a religious tone that is a timeless as Osiris and Horus.

there are elements of the Second Coming of Christ in the Superman saga ever since it first appeared in comic book form in the 1930s. Among the similarities to the Second Coming are: 1) Jor-El (God) casts out Zod (Satan) from Krypton (Heaven); 2) Jor-El’s speech as he and Lara say goodbye to Kal-El “…The son becomes the father and the father the son….”; 3) The ship that brings Kal-El to Earth is in the form of a star (the star of Bethlehem); 4) Kal-El comes to a couple unable to have children “…How we prayed and prayed the good Lord see fit to give us a child….”; 5) Just as there is not much known about Jesus during his middle years, Clark Kent travels into the wilderness to find out who he really was and what he had to do; 6) “…You must live as one of them but always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be, they only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son.”

Now when you add in the fight scenes between Superman and the 3 villains, you have the perfect battle!! It can’t get any better as a movie. However, I will add that you can skip Superman III & IV and go straight to Superman Returns. You won’t miss a thing!
